Ma Qian is a physical metallurgist with research interests in metal additive manufacturing, solidification processing, powder metallurgy, metallic biomaterials, and thermodynamics of materials. He completed his higher education (BEng) and research training (MEng and DEng) in metallurgy at the former Beijing University of Iron and Steel Technology (now University of Science and Technology Beijing).
Ma Qian received the Highest Honour of Materials Australia - , the Silver Medal, in 2022. In addition, he has received the 2006 American Society for Metals (ASM) Henry Howe Marion Medal, the 2003 TMS Light Metals Magnesium Technology Award, the inaugural 2003 Australian CAST-CRC Industry Partners Award, and the 2019 RMIT Engineering Executive Dean’s Research Excellence Award (professorial level). He is a Fellow of the American Society for Metals International (FASM, 2020).
