Tilmann Hickel is the head of the Materials Informatics Division at the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM) in Berlin. He began building up this divsion in 2021 after it was newly established in the Materials Chemistry Department. The research is dedicated to the development and use of a digital infrastructure for data-based materials science. Previously, Hickel worked at the Max Planck Institute for Sustainable Materials, where he took over the leadership of the “Computational Phase Studies” group in 2006. Since then, his scientific interest has been in the physics of (meta)stable thermodynamic phases and their transitions. His vision is an ab initio-based prediction of thermodynamic bulk and defect phase diagrams, which are directly related to many technologically relevant microstructure-property relationships in structural materials. Hickel originally began his scientific research with a doctorate in theoretical physics at the Humboldt University of Berlin, which he completed in 2005. Since then, he has co-authored more than 150 publications, co-organized numerous conferences and symposia, and served on several scientific committees and advisory boards.
