Hang Z. Yu is an Associate Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Virginia Tech. He earned his B.S. in physics from Peking University in 2007 and his Ph.D. in materials science and engineering from MIT in 2013. He conducted postdoctoral research at MIT from 2013 to 2015 prior to joining the Virginia Tech faculty in January 2016. Professor Yu’s research focuses on materials processing and additive manufacturing, with special emphasis on the underlying processing physics and materials science. Another area of great interest involves leveraging the unique capabilities of additive manufacturing in multi-scale local control to create materials with previously unattainable degrees of structural complexity and performance superiority. Recognized as a research pioneer of solid-state metal additive manufacturing, Professor Yu is a recipient of the DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) Young Faculty Award and authors the book: ‘Additive Friction Stir Deposition’ (ISBN 9780128243954, Elsevier, 2022. Book Series: Additive Manufacturing Materials and Technologies).
