Irene J. Beyerlein is currently a scientist at Los Alamos National Laboratory in Theoretical Division. She received her Ph.D. in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics at Cornell University in 1997 and joined LANL in 1997 as a J. R. Oppenheimer Fellow. Her research interests lie in computational and theoretical materials science and the effects of microstructure and defects on material properties. Currently Dr. Beyerlein is the co-Director of a DoE Office of Basic Energy Sciences Energy Frontier Research Center, entitled the Center for Materials at Irradiation and Mechanical Extremes. She has 170 peer-reviewed publications, four book chapters, two review articles, and a co-authored book, entitled, Fundamentals and Engineering of Severe Plastic Deformation . Dr. Beyerlein was recently awarded the 2012 LANL Fellows’ Prize for Research, the 2013 International Journal of Plasticity Young Research Award, and the 2014 Distinguished Mentor Award. She has also won the title of New Mexico State Road Cycling Champion twice.
