Prof. Jian-Feng Nie
Coop Governor
Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Monash University
Jian-Feng Nie obtained his PhD in Materials Engineering from Monash University in 1993. Following that, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Queensland and the CSIRO Division of Materials Science and Technology. In 1995, he returned to Monash University and was later promoted to the position of professor in materials engineering. His research interests cover physical metallurgy of light alloys, biodegradable zinc alloys and magnesium alloys, applications of scanning transmission electron microscopy and electron backscatter diffraction in materials characterization, and processing-microstructure-property relationships. He has authored or co-authored over 150 technical papers, one book (the 5th Edition of “Light Alloys”), one book chapter in the 5th Edition of “Physical Metallurgy”, one article on magnesium alloys featured in the 2nd Edition of “Encyclopedia of Condensed Matter Physics”. He is the recipient of the AIME Champion Mathewson Medal Award of The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS) in 2015.
He serves as the chair of the National Events Committee of Materials Australia and has previously held the position of Chair of the Phase Transformations Committee of TMS. He also serves as an editor of Metallurgical and Materials Transactions. He chaired the 7th Pacific Rim International Conference on Advanced Materials and Processing (PRICM-7) and played a significant role in fostering cooperation among TMS, the Japan Institute of Metals and Materials, the Korean Institute of Metals and Materials, the Chinese Society of Metals, and Materials Australia.
