Timothy J. Rupert is a Professor of Materials Science and Engineering and the Director of the Hopkins Extreme Materials Institute (HEMI) at Johns Hopkins University. He received his B.S./M.S.E. in Mechanical Engineering from Johns Hopkins University and his Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His research focuses on the discovery of new structure-property relationships in nanostructured materials as well as the study of defects and complexions at the atomic level. He has served in a number of roles for professional societies, primarily ASM International and The Minerals, Metals and Materials Society (TMS), including as Program Director and a member of the Board of Directors for TMS from 2021-2024. Rupert is a fellow of ASM International and has received the ASM International Bradley Stoughton Award for Young Teachers. Other awards include the NSF Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Award, Army Research Office Young Investigator Program (YIP) Award, Department of Energy Early Career Research Program Award, the AIME-TMS Rossiter W. Raymond Memorial Award, a Hellman Fellowship, and the TMS Brimacombe Medal. Rupert became an editor of Acta/Scripta Materialia in 2025.
