YULIANG ZHAO is a Distinguished Professor at the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). He received his PhD in Chemistry from Tokyo Metropolitan University (1999) and pioneered the field of nanotoxicology in 2001. His research focuses on decoding the interactions between engineered bio-nanomaterials and biological systems, establishing fundamental principles for safe nano-biomaterials/nano-medicine development. He created innovative methodologies including isotope-labeling techniques for nanoparticle tracking and synchrotron-based 3D chemical mapping in living organisms. His discoveries of nano-size/shape effects and “Five General Laws” of nanoparticles’ bio-behavior revolutionized drug delivery design.

He is the elected member of Chinese Academy of Sciences (2017), The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) for Developing Countries (2018),and Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences (2022). His honors include the TWAS Prize in Chemistry (2016), National Natural Science Award (twice in 2012 and 2018), and recognition as a “World’s Most Influential Scientific Mind” by Thomson Reuters (2014). He authored the first global textbook Nanotoxicology (2007) and founded the GBA National Institute for Nanotechnology Innovation (2019), driving 13 biomaterials and nanomedicine products to market. With 659 publications (h-index 153) and 11 books of nano-biomaterials, he ranks the first in highly cited nanotoxicology scientists worldwide (86 ESI Hot Papers, 2001-2025). He is now the President of Chinese Society for Biomaterials.
